Following extensive repairs and tests, a 1948 steam locomotive Clan Line is back in action! Now owned by the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society, works focused on getting the steam locomotive certified to run on the modern railway – just in time for the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the society.
STEM Ambassador Nathan Tutty said “It is superb to see the locomotive operational again and we look forward to seeing the reactions of people young and old when a steam train thunders through stations where they are least expecting it!”
The society are now looking to expand on their existing opportunities for schools and other STEM groups and organisations to help inspire the next generation of engineers. In addition to talks and presentations, the society’s education team are happy to deliver:
- Pre-arranged visits to Clan Line’s home in London – visitors will also be able to see modern trains and learn about the evolution of the railways.
- School presentations on how the locomotive works, how steam as an engineering application is used in the 21st Century, and the challenges of running an old steam train on the modern railway system.
