London STEM Ambassadors contributed to supporting STEM education for thousands of young people in 2021 /2022. If you want to know more about it – here is a quick run down!
Over the year from 1st April 2021 to 31st March 2022 we had 1465 Approved STEM Ambassadors in London, of whom 1020 did an activity within that period. (We ask STEM Ambassadors to do at least one activity per year but some of these Ambassadors will have joined the programme during this reporting period so won’t have done their first activity yet).
Over 81% of all Secondary Schools in London, and 63% of Further Education Colleges had some contact with a STEM Ambassador. Of the 1800 Primary Schools in London 31% met a STEM Ambassador which is the most STEM Ambassadors in London have ever reached! We are really trying to increase the number of STEM Ambassadors who are happy to work with primary school children as some find it a bit more difficult than working with older ages so have been running monthly training on ‘How to Explain Your Job to an 8 Year Old’ for STEM Ambassadors – do book on if you haven’t already.
In total London STEM Ambassadors contributed an amazing 21,000 hours of volunteering. Many London STEM Ambassadors supported mentoring, putting in 3000 hours to work with students, increasing their awareness of life beyond school and the range of STEM professions available. We know however that lots more activity has taken place but the hours have not been recorded on the platform – please do record your volunteering as much of it remains hidden which means we can’t show the true value of STEM Ambassador generosity.
Our most active STEM Ambassador put in 320 hours supporting a local school. What a fantastic commitment! If you want to support a local school on a regular basis, do get in touch with us via london-hub@stem.org.uk to see which schools near you would love to chat to you.
It’s not just in classrooms too – museums, libraries, code clubs and youth groups all benefited from your time and support.
Thank you to all STEM Ambassadors, Educators and Companies who give their time and expertise to support young people’s science education. You really are making a difference!
