Once you are a fully approved Ambassador it is great to get started straight away as doing one activity will help you work out where you can help the most.
- Get to know the programme. Join us on one of our weekly, online ‘Getting Started as a STEM Ambassador‘ sessions. This half-hour, lunchtime session is aimed at new STEM Ambassadors and is a way of introducing ourselves to you. You’ll hear from one of our team on ways to get involved with volunteering and get some advice on where to start with your first activity. There’ll also be a chance at the end to ask any questions you may have.
- Learn about different types of activities and their impact:
Other ways to get started:
- Identify your offer. Think about if you think you are best placed to help with a request about careers or a request linked to a particular topic. Think about whether you feel most confident with students under 11 years of age or older students. Also think about whether you are looking for an online activity or something where you can get the students reaction in a classroom. You can then search for activities and refine the search using these criteria. If you want to you can create an ‘offer’ for teachers and let them approach you to help.
- Do some training. We frequently run a session called ‘How To Explain Your Job to an 8 Year Old’. This 1 hour, online session helps you adapt your language and approach when getting ready to give a short talk about your job to primary-aged children. For the link to sign up for one of these sessions, and to see our full range of training sessions, visit the Support Sessions page on the STEM Ambassador Community. You can also access a wide range of e-learning courses and resources in the Training Hub section of the STEM Ambassador Community.
- Contact a school local to you. Ask them if they would like a short talk from you about your job or whether your company can get involved with supporting students with careers information.
- Remember to record your hours you spend doing volunteering. This is important so that your STEM Ambassador account stays live and so that we can show the generosity of STEM Ambassadors in supporting young people’s STEM education. Download the guide below for full instructions on how to record your hours.
