Volunteer as a STEM tutor

Would you like to help inspire the next generation? We would love the help from STEM Ambassadors to volunteer as tutors to the young people on our programme.

The Access Project is an education charity whose mission is to enable young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to access top universities. Currently only 4 in 100 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds secure a place. This compares to 24 in 100 from private schools.

The opportunity: You can tutor a young person aged between 14-18 years, online, for 1 hour a week. You will be a core component in a unique programme helping to tackle education inequality, and inspire the next generation of young people – by helping them reach their full potential.

Support in STEM subjects is the most common request The Access Project’s young people make. They recognise that a strong foundation in STEM gives them a great platform for their future. The Access Project need your help to give these young people this. Volunteers will help facilitate the academic learning of students, collaboratively problem solving to help reinforce young people’s knowledge.

Why volunteer with The Access Project?

  • Support a young person in a subject of your choice to achieve the GCSE / A level grades they deserve and to fulfil their potential.
  • Students supported by The Access Project typically achieve a grade higher at GCSE and are four times more likely than their peers to progress to a top-third ranked university.
  • Gain the opportunity to reconnect with a subject that you enjoy and inspire a young person.
  • Build transferable skills, experience and knowledge through ongoing training and development as part of the role.

No prior teaching experience necessary, as we provide everything you need to get started as a volunteer tutor. This includes guidance on lesson planning, topic guidance and resources from The Access Project. Tutorials will typically take place after school hours, starting no later than 6pm, and can be arranged to fit your availability on a week by week basis.
