The Importance of Recording Your Volunteering

We always request STEM Ambassadors to record their volunteering hours but why is this important?

We currently (May 2024) have about 2000 STEM Ambassadors registered in London who are doing amazing volunteering and really making a difference to young people and teachers.

All we ask is that Ambassadors carry out one activity per year but you’d be surprised how many people we need to contact each year to say that no activities have been recorded on their profile, only for them to tell us that they’ve done loads of volunteering!

Volunteering that happens but isn’t recorded on the STEM Ambassador platform is still fantastic, but it is even better when it isn’t hidden!

  • London STEM Ambassadors Partners look at which schools have or haven’t engaged with the STEM Ambassador programme. Without your recorded activity listing the school it gives an incomplete picture.
  • The STEM Ambassador programme is funded by UKRI. Amongst many other things their funding pays for your DBS check. Without your recorded activity they cannot see the generosity of the STEM Ambassadors that make the programme worthwhile to support.
  • As a STEM Ambassador we want to recognise the good work you are doing with digital badges, annual awards and by showcasing great practice. Without your recorded activity we cannot do this.

It only takes a few minutes to log an activity via the platform at www.stem.org.uk/dashboard. You can find instructions on how to do this in the Resources section of the Training Hub.

  • You can do one activity covering several events if you want eg. If you have been mentoring a student and done several sessions, then the hours can be recorded all in one go.
  • Don’t worry about filling out a very detailed description. The main points to record are the participating schools and the number of hours you contributed – remember to record your preparation and travel hours too!
  • Don’t worry about the ‘schemes’ box unless you know you are part of a scheme.
  • If you have a large number of hours eg. You are a STEM Employer lead and want to upload all your employee’s volunteering we can work with you to do this. Just contact us at london-hub@stem.org.uk.
  • If you need any other support, contact us at stem-ambassadors@stem.org.uk and we’ll be happy to help.
